Comparative Profiles Of Two Christian Historical Fiction Authors

By Leslie Ball

A Christian novel may be described as a book that presents a Christian theme or one that has a Christian plot and/or characters. "The Fellowship of the Ring, " by J. R. R. Tolkien, was written by a Christian author and, perhaps surprisingly, contains Christian themes. Two of the most successful Christian historical fiction authors are Taylor Caldwell and Wendy Alec, both of whom hail from the United Kingdom.

Taylor Caldwell was born on the 7th of September, 1900, in the city of Manchester in northern England. She lived for 84 years, was married four times and had two children, both daughters. She was divorced twice and widowed once. She died of heart failure in 1985. Among her great historical novels were the fictional biographies of Judas, the disciple who betrayed Jesus Christ to his killers; Luke, physician and author of the New Testament Books of Luke and Acts; and the apostle Paul, who transformed from a killer of Christians to one of the world's most successful soul-savers in, literally, the blink of an eye.

With, "Great Lion of God, " her characterizations and descriptions of the scenes are so lifelike, you really have to keep reminding yourself that it is fiction, and not a biography. It's like she was right there, 2000 years ago. The book appears to be currently out of print and is not available in e-book form, but you can usually find a paper or hardback version for sale on the Internet.

Taylor Caldwell also wrote, "The Devil's Advocate, " a dystopian tale in which North America falls under the reign of a Communist dictatorship. She won numerous awards for her writing, including the Grand Prix Chatvain in 1950; the National League of American Pen Women gold medal in 1948; and, in 1949, she won the Buffalo Evening News Award. Altogether, she published more than 42 novels.

The founder and head of God TV, Wendy Alec was born in London, England, and grew up in Durban, South Africa. Like Taylor Caldwell, she is now divorced. After 20 years of marriage and together nursing the new Christian television channel, husband Rory left her for another woman. She sees this as a Satanic attack from which God has healed her.

She has written several novels, including the hugely successful "Chronicle of Brothers" Series, beginning with the "Fall of Lucifer." Like Taylor Caldwell, Wendy Alec has a gift for describing the physical environment surrounding her characters and making the reader feel like they are right there in the center of the action. "Fall of Lucifer, " the first volume in the seven-part Chronicle of Brothers series, has been described as a gripping supernatural thriller. It tells the story of Lucifer's fall from grace and the basis for the constant struggle between good and evil that has been going on since the creation of man.

"Fall of Lucifer, " a best-selling supernatural thriller, describes the events leading up to Lucifer's being cast out of heaven with band of rebel angels. Her autobiography, "Against All Odds, " relates the story of God TV.

These two supernaturally talented women have dedicated their lives to using their God-given gifts to make Christianity accessible to countless souls. The world of Christian historical fiction has never been more appealing.
