Understand Gun Safety To Reduce Chicago IL Gun Violence

By Clayton Maske

In this day and age, in the wake of so much Chicago IL gun violence, it is imperative to understand the basics of gun safety. It doesn't matter how old you are, what nationality or religion you are, or what your political beliefs might be. Every person in this country should learn the basic rules of gun safety.

It should be obvious that you must never finger the trigger of your firearm until you're ready to pull it. This is a fundamental the National Rifle Association stresses. When you are in the process of aiming the weapon at a target, your finger should be on the side or on the guard. You must not even touch the trigger until you are prepared to shoot.

The person with the firearm should never, under any circumstances, point the weapon at another individual or in the direction of an unintended target. Accidents happen all the time, many with dire consequences. If you have a gun in your possession, it should be aimed at the ground.

3. Your gun should be kept unloaded up until you're ready to use it. The first thing you should do when you pick a gun up, is to instantly engage the safety device. The magazine of a gun should be removed before opening up the action and checking the chamber or chambers, to make certain it's clear of ammunition. Get help if you don't know how to inspect the chamber(s) or open the action.

Every year there are tragic news stories reporting accidental shootings involving children. Victims number several hundreds, and those numbers include individuals who mistakenly shoot themselves.

When you make the decision to purchase a firearm, you must make a personal commitment to become familiar with the basic safety rules. Your life and the lives of your family members may depend on it.
