They serve a very specific purpose when driving. Basically, they help you steer to where you want to go so you at least have some form of control when driving. Important, are they not? Yes, of course, they are. Without them, how are you going to control your direction? Your sense of safety could be compromised too if they will be built in a very poor way. Hopefully, they would not be. They also come in different kinds. Like those Drag Handlebars.
This type is longer than the normal and average kind of handlebars. Most of it are just for fashion, to make the rider look cool and badass, though not nearly as those in biker gangs. Admittedly, over time those bikes and their bikers kind of got lame and obnoxious. Especially since they are so freaking loud all the time.
Like ape hangers. No, they do not look anything like apes, unfortunately. But they actually ARE mostly found on choppers. They have such an exaggerated height that its driver has to reach up just to reach them and drive. That is where it got its name, apparently, because apes have long arms and have to swing from point A to B.
Beach bar is another type. They almost are the same as cruisers that slope backward and curve. They are like that so the rider can relax and does not have to reach for anything just to get to freaking somewhere. Although, if they are put on those bikes that make a lot of noise, then is it really worth it?
But when that person who is skydiving positions his body straight and let his head go first, tucking his arms at his side, then, of course, he will go down faster. Another example is a toothpick. Throwing it down while it is in a horizontal way will let it fall slightly slower than doing it in a vertical position.
First example, think about gravity for one. When you drop a pen, how do you do it? Depending on your answer is how fast it will go down. It is pretty easy to understand and kids will know about it. Like, if you drop it while it is on a horizontal position, it will lose to a pen being dropped with its head facing down.
Another is basically the same but with a different object. Test it out on something that has more length than width. Drop two items at the same time but in different positions. The one being dropped vertically is going to win that race to the ground, naturally. Of course, that is what they teach you in grade school science.
The same is applied to riding that bike. Because you are going at certain speed, how you sit on that mode of transportation determines the speed of which you are going. If you sit up straight, expect to go slower than you were expecting. Doing the crouching thing will get you better results, obviously.
And finally the drag bars, the point of this topic. These guys are almost straight and across to make a forward type of leaning and some kind of aerodynamic riding kind of position. These fellas are best for speed.
