Disc Pain Sufferers Find Relief With Norwalk CT Chiropractor

By Loraine Roane

Disc pain is all too common and affects the lives of many people. Fortunately, in most instances relief can be found with Norwalk CT chiropractors. Some sufferers ignore the pain, which frequently makes the situation worse. There is no reason to delay seeing a chiropractic doctor.

Some people wonder what a disc is and how it works in the body. The spine has 23 discs, and each disc acts to absorb the shocks between vertebrae due to body movements or some outside force. Discs are not bones. They are cartilage and work as a joint to hold vertebrae in their place. They also give the spine the ability to be flexible. A disc can become damaged due to age, disease or injury.

There are different types of problems associated with discs. There are bulging discs, herniated discs and slipped discs. A slipped disc can cause nerve pain when a disc slips back and forth between the bones and sometimes hits a nerve. A bulging disc can also put pressure on an adjacent nerve. Different issues involving a disc call for different care. This is why chiropractic care should be sought sooner rather than later.

Chiropractors always take a holistic approach to caring for their patients. So the first order of business for the chiropractor is to evaluate the health of the patient with physical examination and perhaps some imaging and laboratory testing. Following the evaluation, the doctor of chiropractic, DC, will be able to determine the best course of action for care.

In many cases, spinal manipulation or spinal adjustments are helpful to manage the pain. This may include manual therapy and in some instances therapeutic exercises. All chiropractic care is non invasive, and DCs do not prescribe medication to dull the pain. The course of last resort is surgery, which may or may not be successful.

Chiropractors believe that the body is a self healing organism. Their objective is to help the patient heal his or her own body. If for any reason, chiropractic care is not appropriate, the DC will refer the patient to a surgeon for further evaluation.
