Necessities Of Disaster Survival Kits

By Sandra Wilson

Calamities are prevalent nowadays affecting people from all parts of the world. Some like earthquakes and hurricanes claim a lot of lives and leave others injured and homeless. Although surviving such things is not easy, being the kind of people who fear risk is important because you will prepare for such things. Disaster survival kits help save a lot of lives but most people do not know what to include. Below are some things that must be in the gears.

One, the gear must have emergency food. A person will not be well prepared for a calamity if food is missing in the gear they pack. The meals should be packed in freeze-dried packs that can last for weeks. Having food that is preserved to prevent it from going bad is good since there will be no refrigeration or special preparations required. Make sure after every half a year you change the stock to ensure it stays fresh all the time.

The next essential is water. Make sure you pack three gallons of water in your pack. When an earthquake occurs or floods, the water supply will be cut or the water might not be safe for drinking. Store at least three gallons of water for each of your family members in the house. If you have pets, you might also want to set aside water for them. By the time you are rescued, you will be still safe since you will not drink contaminated water.

Some of the people who die during some disasters lack a way of communicating with rescuers. If you are trapped in the ground after an earthquake and the power is off. Having a solar lamp in your gear can save you because the phones will not go off. If it is at night and the rescuers cannot spot you, the torchlight can act as an alert signal thus saving your life.

Also, a first aid kit is a must. When calamities like earthquakes occur, people are bound to die while others get seriously injured. The Red Cross and other people might not find you immediately. When injuries occur, the first aid gear will be useful in reducing the bleeding or pain until help arrives. Make sure all the things that should be in the first aid box are there.

You have witnessed or seen on the television or newspapers people displaced by floods or storms. They are forced to live outside their homes and it gets hard for them during nights because of the cold. Rather than waiting for donors to supply blankets tents and sleeping bags, having yours in place will help your family during these times. They will stay warm throughout and no cases of pneumonia are cold flu will be witnessed.

Additionally, sanitation and hygiene are important. In case you are forced to camp somewhere for some time, toilets will be a problem. Some people use the bush which increases the risk of disease. Keep yourself clean by having soaps, toilet papers and any other thing that might need to stay clean. Remember to pack a pail too because it will be used as a toilet.

Lastly, keep in mind the survival gear too. Keep a duct tape, knife and a wrench in the pack. These and the above items are very critical in the way you live once you experience a disaster. Keep your kits ready all the time and always conduct some maintenance to keep the things fresh and in good shape.
