Helping Loved Ones Into An Adult Residential Facility

By Raymond Stevens

Adults who are mentally ill have to deal with a lot of stigmas. There is also a lot of misunderstanding about how to treat them, and the way they live. If you or someone you know is mentally ill and wants to move to a place where people are understanding of your needs, an adult residential facility in Los Angeles, CA is a great way to achieve that.

To check yourself or anyone else into one of these facilities, the patient must be at least 18 years old. Most ask that they at least be able to bathe and feed themselves, though there may be other prerequisites. If the patient cannot do these things, they may be referred to a facility that can handle this type of care. Generally, residents have to be medically stable for admittance.

Many mental disorders can be treated with care and understand in the facility, including people with depression and anxiety issues. The calm environment also helps people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder have a fulfilling life that is enriching and entertaining. Even war veterans who have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) will find that living in one of these homes is great for helping them cope with their illness and get on with finding and living a happy life.

The amount of services and facilities available to residents almost rivals that of a local motel. There are laundry facilities available in the building and a cleaning staff handles some of the chores that need to get done. You can have a roommate in a semi private room or if your insurance or budget covers it, a private room so you can be alone when you wish. Meals are included in the price, and includes three full meals a day, and usually some kind of snacks are available between meals. If you have special dietary needs, this will not be a problem.

This type of facility lets people with mental illness see that they are not alone, and become friends with like minded people. Beyond the socializing in the facility, there are sometimes public outings that are scheduled so all patients get the chance to interact with the public and go out and have a little bit of fun.

There is staff available 24 hour a day, seven days a week, including some medical staff. Some doctors may be brought in periodically to check on the residents. If they prefer to see their own doctor outside of the home, transportation arrangements can be made to ensure all doctor appointments are kept.

Many facilities give residents lessons or full classes in things like money management to help them develop life skills. Whether the patient will eventually leave or spend the rest of their life there, they get the chance to learn new things that enrich their life and make it more fulfilling.

Before moving yourself or someone you love in, you should ensure the company running the place is certified by the California Department of Social Services. They should be full registered and run background checks on staff so you know you are safe at all times. This also gives you peace of mind as you move in and start a new life among people who understand your needs.
