How To Provide Affordable Housing For Young Adults

By Anna Fox

Having a home is a basic need, yet not everyone can meet this need. This is due to various financial challenges facing most people. Therefore, more practical measures should be put in place to see that the percentage of homeless people is reduced significantly. Consequently, hitting the target of providing affordable housing for young adults is of urgent need. While this has been an elusive target, the tips below make it more achievable.

Consider cheaper house designs. The best designs are those that are flexible enough to cater to the occupants' needs while at the same time do not attract high construction costs. A good example is where economies of scale are realized due to massive scale constructions. Similarly, having rooms that adequately save floor space as dictated by the number of inhabitants can save on resources too.

Adopt sustainable strategies. This will involve the use of locally available construction materials and hiring of local constructors and other workers. Benefits resulting from this is that additional transportation costs of building materials will not be necessary. This will boost the economic status of the local population significantly. Employing these strategies ensures that the building process is economical and consequentially, the resultant rental expenses are expected to be relatively low.

Develop residential areas comprising of people with various social and economic statuses. An economic and social diversity region is essential in the generation of equality among several people. There will be a house one can afford regardless of how little they earn. This is as opposed to high-status neighborhoods where young people may be forced to move out due to high rents everywhere.

Also, this can facilitate secure transition schemes where individuals can quickly shift from homelessness to stable and reliable homesteads without the fear of discrimination on whatever basis. The government should also consider coming up with multi-generational facilities. This should ensure that individuals maintain their homes even when the family grows large. This can be through renovations or extension of existing homesteads.

Companies should be encouraged to provide housing allowance for their junior employees. This is particularly beneficial to youths who are yet to establish their financial statuses. Most companies only provide housing for senior employees, leaving the junior ones struggling to survive. Hence, if they can be given allowances, more people will have a chance to attain financial stability and later find suitable homes.

Both public and private homeowners may consider establishing residentials where tenants can share standard utilities but still enjoy the privacy of their homes. For example, parking lots and playgrounds can be shared by several renters. This is aimed at reducing maintenance and rental costs.

The government, on the other hand, should establish more publicly run residential services. This is where low-income and jobless people will be given a priority in securing homes. This does not mean that the houses should be free, but that they should be substantially subsidized. The cost or acquiring or renting a home may also be based on a person's financial ability, among other essential considerations. This will ensure that many low-income people can still afford houses.
