For Fence Staining OK Should Be Prioritized

By Maria Jones

Fence staining refers to the application of stains on fences to restore the beautiful glow of wood. This process is usually applied on fences that have undergone weathering over time to a point that they have lost their beauty and face. The wood on which stains are applied regain its color and may be hard to tell if it is really old. When in need of service companies specializing in fence staining OK is the best location to check out.

Like painting, the first step in staining is surface preparation. The surface needs to be prepared thoroughly so that the stain can form a strong bond with it. Surface preparation involves cleaning all sorts of surface contaminants and dirt on the wood. The best way of doing this is by using a power washer. Pressure washing removes all kinds of dirt and surface contaminants effectively.

Setting the pressure in most models of washers at improper levels usually does more damage than the good it can do. The wood is eroded too deeply when the pressure is too high. One can avoid this by setting the pressure level correctly and using the right type of sprayer tip. The pressure should be able to roughen the grain on smooth wood and not gouge deep.

One should choose pressure washers that operate at 1500-2000 psi. Wood should not be cleaned using more powerful units that operate at 3000 or 3500 psi or more. Spray tips one should use are 15- to 25-degree variants. The entire units can be rented from local rental stores. If not sure about what to do, one should ask the rental store to provide a demonstration. The unit should be easy to use after the demonstration.

One should start to repair any damages and deformations in the fence after they have prepared it adequately. During the repairing process, one should fasten loose boards, countersink protruding nails, and replace damaged boards. The repairing of broken and split boards should be done using waterproof glue. Pulling of wood pieces together should be done using corrosion-resistant screws instead of nails. Bases of posts are prone to rotting and should be painted with wood preservative before stain is applied.

Before the application of the stain begins, one must ensure that the wood is completely dry. It is advisable to give a period of about 24 hours to allow the wood to dry. If the weather is cool and humid, a period of 48 hours is more recommendable. One can check the wood to see if it is completely dry for staining to be done. The type of wood may play a role in how much time is needed for drying.

This job needs one to have various tools and materials to do it well. Some of the tools needed include adjustable wrench, cordless drill, paint roller, paintbrush, power washer, safety glasses, boots, gloves, and an apron. Materials needed include exterior wood glue, semitransparent exterior stain, caulk, exterior screws, turnbuckle, and wood preservative. More materials and tools may be needed depending on the situation.

There are many different methods one can use to apply the stain and ensure that it is worked thoroughly into the wood. One should research on the best ways of applying stain to avoid lap marks and to achieve a uniform coat. When the stain is applied well, it will last between two to five years.
