A Machu Picchu Tour Package Can Create A Dream Vacation

By Sandra Russell

For most a vacation getaway involves hanging out at the beach, visiting a theme park, or traveling to the home of relatives for a week or so in summer. There are a few truly adventurous people who climb mountains, dive in oceans, and are eager to explore exotic places. For these few, Peru might be a great place to go. Most have heard of Inca culture, but not many have had the chance to see it up close. If you are interested in this type of vacation, you might want to choose a Machu Picchu tour package to make the most of your time in South America.

Some believe that this fifteenth century city was actually designed as an estate for the current emperor who planned to use it as a religious retreat. Other historians disagree, but its religious significance cannot be ignored. The city seems to have been built with only one entrance, perhaps in order to allow only a select few to enter. It was never completed and appears to have been abandoned when Europeans landed and spread disease throughout the region. At any rate, the amazing city remained known only to a few and was only reintroduced to the world in the early twentieth century when an American adventurer discovered it.

It became part of the jungle for hundred of years before an American born archaeologist discovered it in the early twentieth century. Since then visitors have been coming to this area in ever increasing numbers. They are awed by the Temple of the Sun, one of the region's most impressive landmarks. People love to tour the Sacred Valley where the Incas traded goods with each other instead of using currency.

These ancient people were dependent on the land for food. They created a terracing system that can still be seen today. The nutrient rich soil they needed had to come from the valley below. So the Machu Picchu residents hauled it all the way up the mountain to use it.

The irrigation system the Incas created here is also very ingenious. It seems that they had extremely advanced ideas for their time. Existing stonework also suggests that they understood how to build structures that would last through time.

Some of the most popular tours include hiking packages. These tours may last as little as two days or extend over a week long period. For those who are able, this may the best of all possible ways to really get an appreciation for the diversity of Inca culture and the region where it existed. Some choose to travel independently or in small private groups. If you are not a seasoned veteran of this area, you should probably take advantage of some local guides.

If an extended hiking tour seems a little more strenuous than you were planning, you can still enjoy the area and your vacation time. You can browse the marketplaces and choose from many of the fine restaurants and shops found here. You can decide which areas of the ruins most interest you and where you want to spend your time.

Machu Picchu, Peru, and South America all have much to offer. They offer spectacular scenery, helpful friendly residents, and a unique history that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world.
