Effects Of Latch Key Children

Some poor parents go for overtime in order to earn more money. The situation can be more concerning where both parents do not have stable jobs. In the process, their kids will be staying part of the night after school on their own worrying about their parents. The latch key children encounter many challenges in their lives that are not of their choice. It is important to try and assist families that are living this kind of life for the sake of their kids.

There are many challenges that affect these kinds of kids. The main problem is loneliness which these kids are prone to. In most cases when the kids are coming back from school, they find no one at home. They spend the evenings on their own. There are some severe cases where the parents come back home when the kids have already fallen asleep. This reduces the time the kid is able to be with their parent to about two hours a day. This often leads to the kid feeling lonely.

When a kid is used to being home alone at night, fear will develop in them. Most elder siblings are left to take care of their younger siblings when the parents have gone to work or are yet to arrive home. This instills fear in them and this may affect their growth negatively. Parents are advised to be home when night falls to ensure their children feel secure.

Boredom is another issue that has been found to affect kids especially the young ones. Despite having toys to play with, kids require bonding with their parents during their free time. This helps them develop new skills which they can use when they are left alone.

Children of nowadays are falling victims to drugs and substance consumption. This has often been brought about by being away from parents. As a result, they get into company with bad friends who will introduce them to the drugs. When the parent is always away, it will be difficult to notice any change in their kid. By the time they come to terms, it could be too late.

Teenagers who are left on their own feel that enough attention is not given to them by parents. At this stage, kids are very curious to know many things and experience many encounters. When there is no one to consult on their issues, their self-esteem is greatly affected.

There is a high likelihood that a kid may drop out of school after having spent a lot of time away from the parent. Some kids who leave school often end up assisting their parents to get more incomes to help raise the younger siblings. This is another problem that will not help resolve the poverty the family has been trapped in.

The law concerning the rights of latch key kids varies from one state to another. There are however provisions that have been put for parents to spend reasonable time with parents. Such parents should be assisted by the state to ensure their kids enjoy good parental acre just like any other kid.
