Best Natural Ways To Control Mosquitoes

By Shawn Hunter

There are many artificial methods of controlling insects and pests today. Most of them involve use of chemicals, which are effective at achieving the required effect, but also cause a lot of harm to the environment and both human and animal health. That among many other reasons makes it necessary to resort to natural methods that do not involve the use of chemical products. This article highlights some of the natural ways to control mosquitoes in a place.

Controlling mosquitoes should start with eliminating long grasses and bushes near a house. A mosquito is a nocturnal insect that hides during the day and searches for sources of blood at night. Bushes and long grasses provide good places for them to hide as they wait for nighttime to start their search. If all hiding places in form of bushes and grass are removed, they are forced to search for other hiding places away from the house.

Secondly, houses that are very dark also provide perfect spots for hiding. Such spots include walls that are dimly lit, wardrobes, and under the bed. Wardrobes can be shaken to chase the insects out and lock the doors and windows. The other spots should be removed or sealed off to deny access.

Mosquitoes need a breeding ground that is suitable to raise their young ones. Such grounds are formed by stagnant water collected in holes or cans after it has rained. Several hundred insects can be laid in a single pool and within a short time, they will be roaming looking for blood to suck. The best way is to pour the water and eliminated any spots where water can be collected from rain.

Another natural method is making use of natural predators of the insect. Tadpoles are such animals. When in water, tadpoles can eat all mosquito eggs and larvae they can get around. That keeps the number of new adults to the lowest level possible. When done for long, this method can be effective.

Another way is to attract bats to the surrounding. It is approximated that a single bat can eat several thousands of mosquitoes in a single night. As such, having a few bats around the garden can highly reduce chances of being bitten at night. Using natural repellants such as citronella essential oil is also effective. One can make citronella candles and light them in the house in the evening or night to keep off the insects.

There are plants that are natural repellents of Insects like a mosquito. One of such plants is lemon balm. The plant is easy to plant and is very efficient at repelling the insect. It contains essential oils like geranial, geraniol, and citronellal which are known to be natural repellents. The oils can be 10 times better at the task than most manufactured products.

Finally, lavender oil has been determined to be very effective at repelling the insects. All one has to do is to add a few drops into vegetable oil and apply it on exposed skins. The mixture has a good smell and does the job moderately effective.
