By Kathrine Franks

Caring for patients with dementia can be challenging. The condition itself is a challenge to the person suffering from it. This is why, caregivers need to have a good command of he things that they are supposed to do so they can provider a better environment, albeit a very stimulating one, for the patient that they are looking after.

There are activities that patients suffering from these conditions should be allowed to take part of. The key is for them to continue using their brain to help prevent the spread of the condition. There are games for dementia patients that their carers can let them engage in so they will be able to battle out the forgetfulness brought about to by the condition.

It matters that you have a good understanding of the condition that they are suffering from if you want to really care for them. You have you to remember that the key towards extending to them the attention and care that they need is when you know what they are going through and what steps have to be taken to avoid the condition from further deteriorating.

Create a good place where your patient can really enjoy the time that they are going to spend here. You want them to feel comfortable and at ease in the place. They can enjoy these games better when they are enjoying the setting there they are doing these activities. Setting a place where they can regularly come to every time you want to hold these activities will create a sense of ease and comfort.

It is important to note that these pastimes need to be simple. However, they should not be as simple as you are degrading the patients in a way were they are doing activities that are exactly targeted for kids. Yes, you need the activity to be simple. But you have to see to it too that it is going to be appropriate enough for adults to play and to be part of.

Games like puzzles and crosswords are very good choices when it comes to doing activities to help engage the patient. They will allow the patient to have more use of the brain since he is going to be competing these puzzles. It is simple enough, but it is going to make good use of his brain in the process. Crosswords, ones that are of larger letters would be good too. Finding words would also be a good choice.

Collecting photos and scrapbooking can be fun too. You will find that there are a lot of things that you can discuss with the patient just by looking at photos. These maybe pictures that they have taken in the past. This is helpful as this will allow you to talk to them while taking a trip down memory lane. It is both fun and very engaging and hence, will allow them to recall things that they may have already forgotten.

Reading activities may be good choices for you to let the patients engage in. You can let them read the book aloud or you do the reading for them. Either way, the best thing about this activity is that it prompts discussions. This allows the patient to have something to talk about, this might even trigger memories and hence, allows his brain to be properly engaged while on it.
