Backpacking In Millisle

By Jonny Blair

Millisle is a cool village near Bangor and Ards in Northern Ireland. It is situated on the Ards Peninsula and is in County Down. This town is just a really popular coastal resort and it also sits not too far away from Belfast, which is the Northern Irish capital city. There is a marvellous windmill in Millisle called Ballycopeland.

The Windmill is worth checking out for its artistic charm. Top sights to look out for:

- Irish Church (Church of Ireland) in Millisle - The real football ground here is Adams Park for Abbey Villa F.C. - Ballycopeland Windmill and the area around it including the information centre

- The cool lagoon and pool here in Millisle - The main beach in the village of Millisle - The Church representing the patron saint of Ireland

- The Presbyterian Religious building in the village - A building which houses a jail type college for the people in Northern Ireland - The First & Last local public house

- Millisle Borstal (former young offender's home)

- The Orange Hall for Protestants in the village

- An Airfield strip but no airport and this one is incomplete

- That farming community area of the village on Woburn Road

- A coffee shop which doubles up as a place selling pottery

Two thousand and three hundred people live in Millisle

Places to Stay:

- The caravan and camping park in Millisle

- A big house in the country

- Waves splashing on the shore

- Another camping zone near the village or settlement of Ballywhiskin

Head to the "First & Last" public house for a local beer and a bite

Our Favourite Restaurant: McClements Fish and Chips

A brilliant cafe remains as Eden Pottery

Some of the villages unknown facts:

- It has been known that families of Jewish tradition and heritage were looked after here at a farm in Millisle. The location was the Woburn Road.

- Despite the political situation in Northern Ireland, Millisle is attracting less sectarian graffiti than other prominent towns and villages in the province.

Moving from one place to another:

- Millisle bus services are operated by Translink and connect to larger settlements nearby such as Bangor, Newtownards and Belfast (7, 7B, 9, 9B, 10A, 10B, 10C all stop on Millisle Main Street, some stop on Woburn Road).

Celebrities in this zone:

- James Antiseptic

- Nidge
